What Is the Difference Between Veneered MDF and MDFLAM?
When people say "MDF," most confuse MDFLAM (melamine-faced MDF) with veneered MDF (MDF faced with real wood veneer). Both are based on an MDF panel; the difference lies in the material used on the surface.
What Is MDFLAM (Melamine-Faced MDF)?
MDFLAM is a product in which melamine-impregnated decorative paper is pressed onto the surface of an MDF panel. The surface carries a printed pattern; the wood look is also imitated through printing.
- Printed-pattern, uniform surface
- A very wide range of colors/patterns
- Usually in ready-made standard sizes
What Is Veneered MDF (Wood Veneer)?
Veneered MDF is produced by pressing thinly sliced real wood veneer onto an MDF (or particleboard) panel. The surface is not a print but real wood; it carries the texture and depth of solid wood.
- Real wood surface, natural grain and texture
- Natural or engineered veneer options
- Suitable for custom production with tone and grain matching
The Key Difference
| Criterion | MDFLAM (Melamine) | Veneered MDF (Wood Veneer) | |--------|------------------|-------------------------------| | Surface | Melamine printed paper | Real wood veneer | | Texture | Printed pattern | Natural wood texture | | Appearance | Uniform, standard | Natural, with depth | | Target | Economical mass production | Natural wood aesthetics |
Which Is Preferred Where?
- Projects looking for an economical, standard and fast solution, where a printed-pattern surface is sufficient → MDFLAM.
- Furniture, interior architecture and prestige projects that want a real wood look, natural texture and originality → veneered MDF.
