Wood Veneer Care and Cleaning: A Practical Guide
With the right care, wood-veneered surfaces keep their original appearance for many years. The practical recommendations below apply to both natural and engineered veneered panels.
Daily and General Cleaning
- Use a soft, lightly damp cloth; then wipe dry with a dry cloth.
- Prefer pH-neutral, mild cleaners.
- Remove dust with a microfiber cloth, in the direction of the grain.
What to Avoid
- Abrasive sponges, scouring powders and hard brushes.
- Solvents / aggressive chemicals (acetone, thinner, those containing ammonia/bleach).
- Excess water: do not leave the surface wet; water can seep in from the edges.
Against Stains
- Wipe up spills immediately with a dry / lightly damp cloth.
- For stubborn stains, first test on an inconspicuous area.
- For greasy stains, wipe gently with a pH-neutral cleaner.
Protection Tips
- Use a coaster for hot pots/glasses and a cutting board for cutting.
- Do not expose the surface to direct and prolonged sunlight; the tone may lighten over time.
- Keep the ambient humidity balanced; both excessive humidity and excessive dryness are harmful to wood.
Care by Surface Finish
Veneered panels are usually protected with a lacquer/varnish (matte, satin or gloss). Use mild products suitable for the finish type; avoid procedures that would wear down the lacquer layer. For uncoated (raw) surfaces, applying a protective coating is recommended.
In Summary
| Do | Don't | |-------|----------| | Soft damp cloth + dry wipe | Abrasive sponge / powder | | pH-neutral cleaner | Solvents, bleaching chemicals | | Coasters and protection | Leaving the surface wet |
